Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech giant said its iconic music player has been replaced by different units, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, stated: "Today, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We've built-in an incredible music expertise throughout all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with assist for spatial audio - there's no higher way to enjoy, uncover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the primary MP3 participant that would hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new class of digital music participant that lets you put your complete music collection in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he mentioned on the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the same again."

Similar MP3 gamers launched by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the same success as the iPod.

Apple has released five versions of its music participant - the Classic, Touch, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod range lately, with cell phone know-how enabling prospects to listen to music services on their telephones.

In 2014, the basic click wheel mannequin was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano had been killed off three years later.

The seventh-generation iPod touch was the one model still on sale today.
