Could 8 (Reuters) - An Alabama regulation that makes it a felony to provide gender-affirming medical therapy to transgender youth went into effect on Sunday while a federal judge weighs whether to grant a movement to place a brief hold on it.

The legislation makes it a crime punishable by up to 10 years in jail to provide puberty blockers, hormones and medical procedures to transgender youth beneath 19.

Governor Kay Ivey had signed the bill on April 8. An identical but not as far-reaching regulation in Arkansas was blocked by the courts last 12 months before it could go into effect.

After a two-day listening to concluded on Friday, U.S. District Decide Liles Burke gave no indication on when he'll rule on the motion searching for to briefly halt enforcement of the ban whereas a lawsuit is pending, according to local media reports.
