Die Seitenbesitzer erkannten schnell den Wert einer lieblings Positionierung in Suchergebnissen und recht bald entwickelten sich Organisation, die sich auf die Aufwertung ausgerichteten. In den Anfängen passierte der Antritt oft bezüglich der Übertragung der URL der entsprechenden Seite in puncto verschiedenen Suchmaschinen. Diese sendeten dann einen Webcrawler zur Prüfung der Seite aus und indexierten sie.[1] Der Webcrawler lud die Webpräsenz auf den Server der Search Engine, wo ein weiteres Computerprogramm, der sogenannte Indexer, Infos herauslas und katalogisierte (genannte Ansprüche, Links zu sonstigen Seiten). Die damaligen Modellen der Suchalgorithmen basierten auf Informationen, die durch die Webmaster eigenständig vorgegeben wurden von empirica, wie Meta-Elemente, oder durch Indexdateien in Suchmaschinen im Netz wie ALIWEB. Meta-Elemente geben eine Übersicht per Thema einer Seite, dennoch stellte sich bald herab, dass die Anwendung der Details nicht ordentlich war, da die Wahl der verwendeten Schlagworte durch den Webmaster eine ungenaue Erläuterung des Seiteninhalts wiedergeben vermochten. Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in Meta-Elementen vermochten so irrelevante Unterseiten bei speziellen Ausschau halten listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller mehrere Punkte innerhalb des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu beeinflussen, dass die Seite besser in den Ergebnissen gelistet wird.[3] Da die späten Suchmaschinen im WWW sehr auf Faktoren angewiesen waren, die bloß in Händen der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr vulnerabel für Schindluder und Manipulationen im Ranking. Um tolle und relevantere Testurteile in Suchergebnissen zu bekommen, mussten sich die Inhaber der Suchmaschinen im Netz an diese Rahmenbedingungen adaptieren. Weil der Triumph einer Suchmaschine davon abhängt, wesentliche Suchergebnisse zu den gestellten Keywords anzuzeigen, vermochten unpassende Vergleichsergebnisse dazu führen, dass sich die Anwender nach ähnlichen Möglichkeiten bei dem Suche im Web umblicken. Die Erwiderung der Suchmaschinen im Internet inventar in komplexeren Algorithmen für das Ranking, die Aspekte beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur kompliziert kontrollierbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin konstruierten mit „Backrub“ – dem Urahn von Die Suchmaschine – eine Suchseite, die auf einem mathematischen Algorithmus basierte, der anhand der Verlinkungsstruktur Websites gewichtete und dies in Rankingalgorithmus einfluss besitzen ließ.
