Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech large said its iconic music player has been replaced by other devices, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, stated: "In the present day, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have integrated an unbelievable music experience across all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with assist for spatial audio - there's no better option to get pleasure from, discover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the unique iPod and it was the primary MP3 player that could hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a whole new category of digital music participant that lets you put your complete music assortment in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he said at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the same again."

Similar MP3 players launched by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the identical success as the iPod.

Apple has launched five variations of its music participant - the Basic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod range in recent times, with cell phone technology enabling customers to hearken to music services on their phones.

In 2014, the traditional click on wheel mannequin was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano had been killed off three years later.

The seventh-generation iPod touch was the only mannequin still on sale right now.

Without the iPod, there would never have been an iPhone or iPod, in response to its inventor Tony Fadell.
